Frequently Asked Questions

Your Septic System Questions — Answered by the Experts

Septic systems can be confusing — especially if you’re a first-time homeowner or dealing with your first repair or installation. At Franks Septic & Pumping, we believe in educating our customers, not just servicing their systems.

Below, we’ve answered the most common questions we receive from homeowners and property managers throughout Bastrop, Bryan, Brenham, College Station, Giddings, and surrounding Central Texas communities.

General Septic System

  • How often should I pump my septic tank?

Most homes should pump their septic tank every 3 to 5 years. This depends on your tank size, household size, and water usage. If you have an aerobic system, maintenance may be required more frequently.

  • What happens if I don't pump my tank regularly?

Solids will build up in your tank, eventually flowing into your drain field and causing clogs, backups, and even total system failure. Regular pumping is far more affordable than system replacement.

  • How do I know if my septic system is failing?

    Signs of failure include:

    • Slow drains or frequent backups
    • Bad odors near your tank or yard
    • Pooling water over your drain field
    • Sewage surfacing or backing up indoors
    • Alarm lights or sounds (for aerobic systems)
  • Can I add anything to help my septic system work better?

We may recommend biological additives in some cases, but most systems work fine without them if pumped and maintained properly. Avoid over-the-counter "quick fix" products — they often do more harm than good.

  • How long does a septic system last?

With proper care, a well-installed septic system can last 20–30 years or more. Lifespan depends on usage, materials, soil conditions, and maintenance.

Septic Tank Pumping

  • What is included in a pumping service?

    Our pumping service includes:

    • Sludge and scum removal
    • Tank inspection for damage or wear
    • Locating tank lids (if needed)
    • Proper disposal at a licensed facility
    • Optional maintenance recommendations
  • Can I pump my tank myself?

No. Septic pumping requires specialized equipment, training, and waste disposal licensing. Attempting to pump your own tank is unsafe and illegal in most Texas counties.

  • How long does it take to pump a septic tank?

Most residential jobs take about 1–1.5 hours, depending on tank size and access.

Septic Installation & Replacement

  • Do I need a permit for a new septic system?

Yes. All new septic installations in Texas require permits and must meet local health codes. We handle permitting for you as part of our full-service installation.

  • How do I know what size tank I need?

Tank size depends on the number of bedrooms, water usage, and local code. We’ll help you select the right tank during your free estimate consultation.

  • How long does installation take?

Most residential systems are installed in 2–5 business days, depending on weather and property conditions.

  • Do you replace old or failed septic systems?

Yes. We remove and replace damaged tanks or entire systems and handle any necessary upgrades to meet current regulations.

Aerobic Septic System

  • What is an aerobic septic system?

An aerobic system uses oxygen to break down waste faster and more efficiently. These systems require electricity, moving parts, and regular maintenance.

  • How often do aerobic systems need service?

In Texas, most aerobic systems must be serviced every 4 months to stay compliant with TCEQ regulations. We offer maintenance contracts to handle this for you.

  • Why is my aerobic system alarm going off?

    Common causes include:

    • Power failure
    • Full tank
    • Failing aerator or pump
    • Chlorine levels too low
    •  Call us for fast diagnostics and repairs if your alarm activates.

  • Can I use regular bleach in my aerobic system?

No. Only use chlorine tablets made specifically for septic systems. Household bleach and pool chlorine can harm your system and violate TCEQ codes.

Septic Repairs & Maintenance

  • Do you repair septic systems?

    • Broken pipes
    • Failed pumps
    • Cracked tanks
    • Drain field issues
    • Alarm and control panel problems
  • Can I flush wipes or grease into my system?

No. Even “flushable” wipes can clog your lines. Grease, oils, paper towels, and hygiene products should never go into your septic system.

  • What causes bad smells near my septic tank?

This could be a sign of a full tank, a venting issue, or a failing system. We’ll inspect it and recommend the right fix.
